What says “ROCK!” louder than an amplification lead? Nothin’ I tells ya. Nothin’. That’s why I used a lead to create this simple logo for Classic Rock FM (Sydney & Melbourne) via uber cool Sydney ad agency Three Drunk Monkeys. Owned by airwave giant NOVA, Classic Rock FM branding was a privilege to work on due to their openness to non-box-like ideas. For instance, I created the business card below to resemble an old worn concert ticket. Designed to make the owner feel like a rock star, it went platinum with the staff.
Please take the time to enjoy this video clip I co created for creative product agency Buzz. Finding a way to sum up what they do was tricky, but the creative approach to product design was key. My favorite part is the pile of products turning into the logo at the end.
With the aim to create a logo that was as versatile as film itself I designed the new Prodigy logo as a cut out. When applied to printed pieces it takes on a life of its own. It plays with light and shadow and adapts to it’s surroundings. Furthermore it can be stenciled on to other objects and peered though.
I first discovered the perforated business cards concept on an online design blog and incorporated it for Buzz stationery, a company who delivers exciting new products to their clients. There is an element of surprise when you tear off the perforation to reveal the owner’s details and that nostalgic feeling you get when you open a tactile letter the old school way. I designed these to flow on from the my style guide and merge seamlessly with the website and video clip. The minimal design and white space feels corporate yet the use of colour has a sense of edge and innovation. Also in the stationery suite were with compliments slips that read “with compliments” on the outside of the tab and tore off to reveal a complement underneath such as “You are my favourite client” or “You are so good looking”. It is a brave thing to do for a corporate client with high profile clients of their own but it is always greeted with a laugh. It’s the kind of thing that gives you a good feeling about working with Buzz.
One of my favorite projects for 2011 was the Buzz Products rebrand. Not only did I have a chance to design a clever logo and branding device, but I also had a chance to write, set design, create and co direct my first video clip with cinematographer Germain McMicking. The last shot you see here is the buzz logo made entirely out of Buzz Products. The final scene in the film clip is a pile of Buzz Products as the camera pans around to reveal the perfectly (painstakingly placed) logo. I styled the imagery in the shoot around the colours and photographic tone that I created in the branding style guide so we could use the stills from the video shoot in the buzz website and other branding tools. I love looking back on this project, it was a mountain of work and a great challenge but the result is a cool, sophisticated image for a company that truly deserves it.
